New CD releases November 29th 2011

Due to a lack of credible music releases and a lack of imagination to string together an alternate list of 5 discs, I have resorted to reviewing the Amazon.com top 5 selling CDs of the year so far. And considering that the year is almost over then I can suggest with confidence that these will be the best selling CDs of the year period. You may notice that the list is dominated by women, and the top four are all 25 or younger.

Adele - 21
This is the follow up to Adele's previous release, 19. Did you know that Adele Laurie Blue Adkins names her albums after the age she was when it was recorded, and was a huge Spice Girls fan as a child.
Adele is currently recuperating from having vocal chord surgery back in November, and has had to cancel all performances for the remainder of the year.

Jackie Evancho - Dream With Me
Jackie Evancho has a voice unlike any other 11 year old. The first time I saw her sing I thought she was lip syncing, just like Scotty McCreery tried doing at this years Macy's parade.
I wonder how long she will continue to sell CDs once the novelty of "Aww she is so cute and has such a mature voice" has worn off, since all her songs (much like Susan Boyle) start to sound the same after a while.

Lady Gaga - Born This Way
Who doesn't know the Lady Gaga story so far? Steph (as we in the business call her) has taken a lot of criticism over the title track of this CD, with almost everyone saying that she ripped off Madonna's 'Express Yourself'. Let me tell you a secret, Gaga has been following in Madonna's footsteps for a while and you can argue until you turn blue about whether the similarity between the songs is deliberate or not. Just enjoy the music for what it is, disposable shock pop.

Il Volo - Il Volo
These guys look like the cast of 'Two and a half men' before they grew up, with nerdy Alan on the left, Charlie in the middle and the chubby kid on the right.
Il Volo won an Italian talent show and were instantly launched on the road to success. The road is short and will come to a sudden end when you get too old to be in a boy band. Take care not to confuse Il Volo, a boy band with Volo, Il., a town 50 miles NW of Chicago.

Alison Krauss and Union Station - Paper Airplane
To see this band at #5 was a great suprise, especially when you consider that other, 'bigger' names released CDs in 2011. The banjo picking, bluegrass singing, fiddle fiddling AKUS have been around since 1989, which means this band is older than most of the other people in this list.

Sorry that we didn't have any Justin Bieber or Nicki Minaj for you, but this wasn't an i-Tunes or Billboard top 5. Consider this a reflection of what a certain demographic (people without an mp3 player) is listening to.
