Annual Check In

It's time for our annual check in, see who is still around and who isn't. The good news is that all the old crew are still alive and kicking, although the kicks aren't as high as they used to be and the evening will be spent recovering with vodka and/or Aleve™.

We are still alive this Christmas

Hi, hello and howdy to our loyal band of penguin slappers, and any accidental visitors too.

Why yes, it has been a while since we posted anything and yes we are all still alive. I know some of you were probably getting concerned (please don't comment to the contrary, just leave this little fantasy alive) that you hadn't seen or heard or smelled anything from us, but honestly it got too tough to handle all this excitement, and have families and jobs and pets and all the other day to day stuff we have to do first.

Where are they now? Slap the Penguin

By +Ian C

Hi. How are you? Haven't seen you for a while.

Remember that Satirical News Blog called Slap the Penguin? It was really popular a couple of years ago, before fake news became a mainstream professional thing. Things started to fall apart as the Trump political era dawned. News stories were scrutinized and fact checked, and things looked bleak for non-factual news. It was at that time we decided to take a break from Slapping Penguins.

Where are they now? The Silence of the Lambs

By +Brad Naylor

Can you remember which movie you saw last week? Well I doubt you can remember what was in theaters 25 years ago. For those of you that read the title of this post, I put a big clue up there, for everyone else, the answer is The Silence of the Lambs.

Where are they now? Kenny Loggins

By +Brad Naylor

The name Kenny Loggins makes kids of today think about a list of usernames and passwords for people called Kenny, but to the older, more experienced mind, Kenny Loggins could possibly have been the single most important figure in movie soundtracks of the 80s. More so than Prince, Madonna, David Bowie or even Huey Lewis.

Where are they now? Home Alone

By +Brad Naylor

Can you remember what was showing in movie theatres 25 years ago? I already gave you a blockbuster clue up there ^^^ in the title. Yes it's a quarter century since 8 year old Kevin McCallister was accidentally (?) left Home Alone and forced to protect his parents house from two bumbling burglars during Christmas. Yes I said Christmas, not 'The Holidays', not 'The Festive Season', 25 years ago we were allowed to call it Christmas and nobody got offended.

Where are they now? Flatliners

By +Brad Naylor

Think back 25 years (if you can), what was showing in movie theaters? A group of med students tinkering with the afterlife, betting their lives on who can be dead the longest before being resuscitated by their peers. That's right, it was Flatliners, the movie which is the oft used hub of 'six degrees of Kevin Bacon'

Damn right some lines shouldn't be crossed

Where are they now? Ghost

By +Brad Naylor

25 years ago, the world was moved to tears by the story of Sam and Molly and their love. A love which crossed the boundaries of life and death. Even after a quarter century, Ghost is still one of those feel good romantic movies with a 87% success rate of getting to second base with your viewing partner.

Where are they now? Total Recall

By +Brad Naylor

For those who are old enough to remember 25 years ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of Hollywood's biggest action heroes. With movies like Commando, Predator, and The Running Man already under his belt, the former Mr Universe took on the more challenging roles of Quaid and Hauser in 1990's Total Recall. By challenging, I mean that there was slightly more acting and slightly less action than Arnie's previous movies.

Where are they now? Ian Curtis

By +Ian C

Ian Curtis was the lead singer, lyricist and most emotionally tormented member of the influential late 70's rock band Joy Division, and now 35 years after his death, his story has become the stuff of legends.

WTF? The F-Word in EMF's Unbelievable

By +Ian C

Twenty five years ago, 5 young men from Gloucestershire, UK formed a band called EMF and released their first single, 'Unbelievable' (released in 1991 in the US). The song became an instant hit worldwide with it's high energy punk pop/alternative dance charm. Unbelievable has been used in advertising, movie soundtracks, at sports events and in video games pretty much from day one. The unbelievable thing is that in the quarter century since it was released, Unbelievable has been responsible for the most profanity broadcast across the airwaves worldwide.

Where are they now? Major League

By +Ian C

Considering that my local baseball team begins their season long monopoly of the minor local TV channels, I bring you a topical "Where are they now?" post featuring America's favorite pastime. 25 years ago, the movie theaters were packed with people watching baseball and singing along with "Wild Thing" as Major League, the funniest sports movie since Chariots of Fire Slapshot hit the big screens.

Where are they now? Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

By +Alexa Rankin

"Strange things are afoot at the Circle K" or at least they were 25 years ago, when Bill S.Preston Esq. and Ted 'Theodore' Logan met Rufus, a guy from the future, and a most excellent adventure began.

Where are they now? Pretty In Pink

by +Tina Cruris

It was February 1986, long before I was even a glint in my father's eye [liar - Ed.]and John Hughes was on a roll from '16 candles' and 'The Breakfast Club' and the world was suffering from Molly Ringwald withdrawal, so John wrote 'Pretty in Pink', a class clash movie where a poor, pouty redhead has to choose between her doting childhood sweetheart and a rich but sensitive playboy.

Where are they now? Child's Play

by +Brad Naylor

It was November 1988 and horror movie fans were about to be exposed to one of the most creepy bad guys in the genre's history, a life size best friend called Chucky. Just what we needed after a bunch of lame horror sequels which dominated 25 years ago. The only other horror movie from 1988 I can think of that is worth mentioning is Hellraiser II: Hellbound.

Where are they now? Back to the Future

by +Alexa Rankin

The year was 1985 and the world was waiting for a time travel trilogy to change it's life. As usual Steven Spielberg had his finger on the pulse and with the help of Robert Zemeckis they put together a series of movies to feed our time travel desires. James Cameron had just blown our minds with the negative angle of time travel with The Terminator, and Back to the Future was set to re-balance the time travel karma.

Where are they now? Top Gun

Way back in 1986, the world was exposed to the mach-2 macho movie, Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. The story revolves around a hot shot pilot who goes to the 'Top Gun' academy to fly with the best of the best and while he is there he serenades a chick called Charlie in a bar, pisses off a bunch of other pilots, loses his best friend and co-pilot, screws Charlie (who turns out to be his instructor) and beats the Russians in a cold war face off and then makes nice with all the pilots he pissed off earlier.

Where are they now? Weird Science

It was 1985 and the world needed another Nerds and Sci-fi movie. As luck would have it, John Hughes was standing by with a Nerds and Sci-fi movie starring Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith and Kelly LeBrock.
