New CD releases October 24th 2011

Christmas is definitely cruising towards us at a rapid rate. Sifting through the festive fluff in order to find decent new releases was only moderately easier than last week. And, as usual, I didn't let you down and have highlighted 5 musical masterpieces for your consideration.

Allergy Warning, some of the albums listed below may contain small traces of Christmas and/or Canadians!

Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto
This 14 track concept album from the BritBand Coldplay is, according to Chris Martin, "based on a love story with a happy ending". Mylo and Xyloto live in a nasty futureworld and meet and fall in love against all odds. This album is co-written by all the Coldplayers without any assistance from Mrs Chris Martin aka Gwyneth Paltrow, who took over our New Releases post back in March. Instead they enlisted the help of Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, whose input to the CD is listed as enoxification and additional composition, however people who know Brian Eno's work would describe his input as pomposity and self indulgence.

Michael Bublé - Christmas
What can we say about Michael Bublé that has not been said before? He is the modern day Bing Crosby and proves it here with his Christmas album. These 14 seasonal songs, one of which is an original composition, left me with a warm feeling which seemed to trickle down my legs. Bubes teams up with fellow Canadian banshee, Shania Twain for the classic White Christmas. And if that doesn't melt your Scroogey heart then we are going to play this entire disc from now until 2015.

Toby Keith - Clancy's Tavern
Kobe beef (神戸ビーフ Kōbe Bīfu) refers to cuts of beef from the black Tajima-ushi breed of Wagyū cattle, raised according to strict tradition in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. The meat is generally considered to be a delicacy, renowned for its flavour, tenderness, and fatty, well-marbled texture. Kobe beef can be prepared as steak, sukiyaki, shabu shabu, sashimi, teppanyaki and more.

She & Him - A Very She & Him Christmas
She is Zooey Deschanel and Him is some guy who can play the piano and guitar and had some kind of basement studio. This is a folky, bluesy attempt at parting people from their cash in the lead up to Christmas. Zooey is not a great singer but can carry a tune well enough to tack on some vocals to M. Ward's mix of guitar styles. This is not for listening to in the car, this is background music for Christmas dinner before the big drunken argument involving uncle Peter and his newly sex-changed ex-wife, uncle Vanessa.

Ukulele Christmas - Ukulele Christmas
I'm sorry, but I went up and down the top 200 new releases for this week and this was the only other CD that was remotely worthy of mentioning. I could have talked about Songwriter, Paul Simon's new double disc which is 32 tracks of old songs, all re-recorded, live. I thought about dropping Kelly Clarkson's Stronger into the mix, but decided against it cos I really don't like her music. Besides, this CD kind of carries the underlying theme of Christmas better than the other two. The title says it all, take some Christmas classics and get uncle Peter to play them on his ukulele, until a fight breaks out.
