Top Gun 2 movie announced

By +Tina Cruris

It looks like the second Top Gun movie could be in theaters in time for the 30th anniversary of the first movie which was released in 1986. And Tom Cruise has already signed on to reprise his role as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell under the production banner of Jerry Bruckheimer.

The screenplay is not finished yet, but sources suggest that the plot revolves around Maverick, who went into semi retirement after spending 20 years as a Top Gun instructor, being recalled as a frontline pilot as tensions rise in the former Soviet Republic.

Not only is Maverick still dealing with the demons of his father, and the loss of his good friend, Goose, but he has also taken up drinking because he lost a young pilot under his instruction at 'Top Gun'. All this plus the added stress of being 10 years out of date with naval flight technology.

In his absence, the US Navy scrapped the familiar F14 Tomcat in favor of the newer F18 Hornet which is computer assisted and Maverick just can't deal with having an electronic co-pilot.

Also making a return to the Top Gun franchise is Val Kilmer, but not as a pilot. IceMan put on way too much weight to fly a plane, so he was grounded and given a commission and helps Maverick adapt to the 21st century US Navy. In fact it was he who suggested that Maverick get recalled because he was the best of the best of the best.

The most noticeable absence from the movie is Charlie played by Kelly McGillis. According to to my contact, the movie will feature flashbacks to a Charlie/Maverick wedding, a strained relationship and ultimately the distress as she leaves him for another woman, which makes things so much worse for Maverick and his check writing ego.

Maybe a friendly game of beach volleyball will make things better; or a Fly By...

Watch out for Top Gun 2 in theaters in 2016 2018 2020 2022.
