20 years since Kurt Cobain suicide

By +Alexa Rankin

Can you believe it is 2 decades since the sound of shotgun rang seemingly silently around an otherwise deserted Lake Washington home. This day 20 years ago is the coroner's best guess for when Kurt Cobain, driving force of the Grunge-Rock band Nirvana, apparently killed himself. The official report was a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

Kurt was best known as the grungy lead singer of alternative rock band, Nirvana, who blew onto the music scene in September 1991 with their second album, 'Nevermind' which spawned classic rock hits like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and 'Come As You Are'. It was hardly surprising to witness a giant swing towards the edgy, rocky sound of Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl considering that 90's so far had been a steady stream of crap.

Here we are now...Entertain us!

The Kurt Cobain story is reasonably well known and so I will resist the urge to paraphrase it here. He was a tortured artist, some would say genius, but I think that word might be a little strong. Nirvana were in the right place at the right time with the right attitude and the right music. They single-handedly rescued the 90's from dance music and female soft rock just as the Sex Pistols rescued the 70's from D.I.S.C.O.

Kurt left behind a wife, Courtney Love and a daughter Frances Cobain. He married Love in 1992, 2 years after they first met, sharing a stage in Portland. His band-mates overheard him say "I just saw Courtney Love's Hole and I think I'm in love."

Die hard Nirvana fans refuse to accept that Cobain's death was a suicide and are still campaigning to reopen the investigation, so that their hero can die a hero's death. Either way he is and will always be a member of the '27 Club', a group of musical celebrities who died during their 27th year, which includes Brian Jones, Alan Wilson, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.
