NETFLIX SAYS - Disabled Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) travels to planet Pandora to become an avatar, ingratiate himself with the natives and help Americans mine lucrative unobtainium. James Cameron writes and directs this Golden Globe-winning CGI odyssey that has broken box office records. Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang co-star.
IAN C SAYS - This movie is an amazing adventure into the realm of a computer generated universe. The interaction between live actors and motion captured CGI characters is practically seamless. The visuals within this movie are ground breaking and simply stunning, from the creatures of Pandora to the elaborate flora and fauna.
Add to this, the fact that the movie was filmed in 3D, but not the traditional 'Things coming at you from the screen' 3D. This is James Cameron's 'Thoughtful, scene building and depth enhancing' 3D which aims to make the movie more immersive. No wonder Avatar cost an estimated $300M to make. That's almost $2M per minute for this nearly 3 hour marathon.
As an expensive and extremely long advertisement for 3D CGI movie making technology, Avatar is an outstanding success. As a movie it sucked donkey balls. To quote the great Eric Cartman “It's all a bunch of tree hugging hippie crap” with the addition of a predictable outcome. It is just like all the other underdog, rite-of-passage, conservationist love story featuring giant blue smurfanoid films. James Cameron has written and directed some great movies, but this is not one of them.
You have to see this movie to appreciate the great visuals that Cameron and his team of computer programmers put together. Expect to be amazed, but don't expected to be entertained and if you wear the 3D glasses for the entire movie, expect to have a headache when it's done.

So had the big corporations won like they do in real life every day it would be a better movie?
I don't think it would have been a better movie with the big corporations winning out.
I just believe it was aimed at a certain demographic in which I am not included.
I wonder how many people would praise the movie had it been made for 100,000 dollars by Greenpeace without all the 3D and the CGI.
I admire Cameron for bringing an important conservational message to the people, but viewing from that perspective, I found Avatar tedious and patronising.
I know a lot of people out there enjoyed the movie, and if Avatar can educate the audience about 'green' issues then that is great. Maybe the sequel can deal with global warming.
