December Movie of the Month - Shutter Island

2010 R 138 Minutes

NETFLIX SAYS - World War II soldier-turned-U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) investigates the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane, but his efforts are compromised by his own troubling visions and by Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley). Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortimer and Max von Sydow co-star in director Martin Scorsese's plot twist-filled psychological thriller set on a Massachusetts island in 1954.

Shutter Island DVD coverMENAJ ATTWAR SAYS - Leonardo DiCaprio is one of those actors who can jump into any role; romantic, crazy, tough guy he has tackled it all and won. Post war US Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leo) jumps on the chance to track down an escaped psycho on a remote island which is the home of a hospital for the criminally insane. Everything and everyone, including Dr Cawley (Ben Kingsley) seems to be against Teddy discovering the truth.

Scorsese's plot slowly unravels revealing more twists and further confusing the viewer. Just when you think you have figured it out, another twist begins. As the cover suggests, this movie "requires and demands multiple viewings" and you will certainly benefit from a second sitting unless you are fully alert for the first showing.

There was one aspect of the movie which briefly let it down and it came during the big reveal. I can't give any details without giving away a major twist, but it revolved around the names of some of the characters.

Overall, Shutter Island is an excellent movie. It was well acted, and well produced. If you like psychological thrillers then you should rent/buy this movie ASAP. This is not going to score highly on the penguin scale since it is more of a thoughtful movie. It was much better than The Smurfs, Chipwrecked and Next.

The storyline was excellent (5/5) with a complete lack of breasts (0/5). There were no big explosions, but a modicum of action was relevant to the story (2/5), giving Shutter Island a total of 2.33/5 on the Penguin Scale.
