Don't pick and drive

By +Alexa Rankin

A 40 year old father of three was seriously injured in a car crash yesterday, by his own finger. Dennis Murray was stopped at a stoplight on Ashford Road in Detroit, Mi., when his car was hit from behind by another motorist. The 5 mile per hour impact did not at first seem to be a life threatening one, even though Murray's car was hit hard enough for the airbag to deploy.

Murray picking his nose moments before the crash
The traffic cam picture shows that Dennis Murray was picking his nose, while waiting for a green light when the impact occurred. The airbag inflated driving Murray's finger further up his nose. So far up his nose that he actually pierced his own brain.

Paramedics and firefighters arrived at the scene just minutes after being alerted to the crash and Murray was painstakingly freed from the car with his finger still firmly wedged inside his nasal cavity.

"We could see that he was in distress," said Detroit firefighter Derry Green, "and the medics were concerned that if we pulled the finger out it would do further harm, so we had to cut off his seat belt and remove the door and part of the roof of the vehicle to extract him."

Murray was taken to Henry Ford hospital where surgeons successfully removed the finger during a three hour procedure. Doctors are unsure as to how much damage has been done to the brain and whether he will have any long term issues as a result of the accident.

Staff at Henry Ford described Murray's condition to us as "comfortable but somewhat embarrassed".
