Celebrity Panhandling - Flava Flav

By +Ian C

Flava Flav was born William Jonathan Drayton Jr. in March 1959 and grew up to be a musician, rapper, actor, television personality, and comedian. He is best known for his role as the Hype Man in the popular Long Island dance beat combo, Public Enemy. He has been described as the ultimate Hype Man with his shouts of "Yeah Boy!" and "Flava Flav!" during performances. Some would say that these were his most memorable contributions to Public Enemy while others would say they were his only contributions to Public Enemy.

Public Enemy were well received by the rap community and even managed to break into mainstream with their hardcore raps and political agenda. Their mainstream magic ended in 1994 after recording 'Bring the Noise' with hard rockers, Anthrax, and the boys were left penniless and broken hearted. Sadly for Flav, there was not a lot of call for clock wearing hype men in the music industry.

After years of scraping a living from royalties, PE returned to music with little response from the general public. Rap and Hip Hop had moved on and even though they are still recording and performing today, Public Enemy can barely fill a nightclub, and only their moms buy their records.

We are doing our bit to help feed Flav and his family by making him our Celebrity Panhandler. Any contributions are gratefully received. In light of the recent NWA movie, maybe they will make 'Straight Outta Long Island', the Public Enemy story.
