2015 Women's Soccer World Cup goes unnoticed

By +Ian C

Saturday June 6th saw the beginning of the Women's Soccer World Cup in Canada. The month long event culminated with Sunday's final but went by pretty much unnoticed across most of the globe and especially here in the US, where it is not even a tertiary level sport.

Last year, Americans showed moderate interest in the Men's Soccer World Cup, which usually is known as 'The Soccer World Cup' since the 'Men's' is implied. Anywhere else in the known universe it is called 'The World Cup' since the 'Soccer' is implied. The fact that more than 5 million people in the US tuned in to see a second string international team have their Cinderella Story abruptly ended in the Round of 16 by Belgium is pretty amazing.

Most Americans view soccer as a schoolgirl game because you don't get padded up and try to knock your opponents over, so it's quite a surprise that more people watched last Sunday's final than any other soccer game in US history. 25 million people tuned in to see the US ladies defeat the Japanese 5-2 in the biggest soccer game in their history.

25 million viewers seems mighty impressive until you realise that that was the same number of people who watched the first season of 'Game of Thrones', and that's on a subscription cable channel. Compare those numbers with February's Super Bowl viewing figures of 114 million and you see how insignificant 25 million viewers becomes.

The next Women's World Cup is in 2019 and the host nation, France, have announced their plan to increase viewers which involves a modified uniform which will allow the players more freedom of movement and make the game to move a little faster and flow more smoothly.

So far Puma, Adidas, and Johnson's baby oil have signed up to sponsor the uniforms, and guessing from the shape of logo, Kotex will be sponsoring the soccer balls for the tournament.

Did you watch any of the 2015 World Cup? Do you know who won? Who do you think will win the 2019 Women's Soccer World Cup? Which Soccer player would you like to see in the official 2019 uniform? Please share your thoughts, feelings or abuse in the comments section below.
